Cafe Price Rating Logs

Ratings publish once a cafe passes five reviews. Every price carries the date it was logged. After a year it is flagged for rechecking.

By county

Method

01

One standard serve

Every price is for the same thing: a regular 8oz flat white with regular milk. Alternative milks such as oat, soya and almond usually do carry a surcharge, and that is recorded separately, as are own-cup discounts and loyalty cards.

02

The whole island

Cafes in both the Republic and Northern Ireland are tracked. The default view combines both, converting sterling to euro at that day's FX rate and ranking on that converted figure. Hover a price to see the original in its own currency. Switch to Republic only or Northern Ireland only to see either side on its own, always in its own currency.

03

People, not menus

Prices come from customers reporting what they paid at the counter. Anyone can submit one, and every submission is checked before it is published — nothing here is estimated or inferred. If you run one of these cafes and a number is wrong, tell us and we'll correct it: the index is only worth anything if it's right.

04

Median, and corroboration

We publish the median of recent reports, not the average, so one mistake moves nothing. A price that differs sharply from the last is held until a second person confirms it.

05

Scores need volume

Ratings cover taste, texture, appearance, value, consistency and experience. No score publishes below five ratings, and low-sample scores are weighted toward the national mean.

06

Nothing is invented

A cafe with no logged price is shown as exactly that, and a county publishes no median until fifteen of its cafes are mapped. We would rather display a gap than a guess.
